AEFAO TAPETES ARRAIOLOS (AEFAO “ARRAIOLOS RUGS”)
The Anglo American group supports the Women “Tapeceiras” (handcrafters) project, which is an initiative that encourages the production of typically handcrafted regional Arraiolos Rugs. This work has value to the culture and economy of Conceição do Mato Dentro (a small city in the southeast of Brazil) and offers many opportunities for the women of this region.
Also known as “Tapetes do Mato Dentro”, the Arraiolo Rug is a tradition that rescues the cultural roots of tapestry from the oldest techniques of embroidery, wefts, mixtures of styles and mosaics of lines and colors. This work is closely linked to the culture of Minas Gerais and uses the architecture of churches and baroque monuments, folklore festivals and aspects of flora and fauna as an inspiration.
The Women Tapeceiras Project develops and implements actions for social inclusion and generating of income by encouraging activities in handcrafting, such as training workshops, lectures and other initiatives related to the areas of health, education and citizenship.
AEFAO, The Farm School Association of Arts and Crafts has been working in the preservation of arts and crafts in Minas Gerais since 1984. This organization values regional culture and helps the workforce to be better qualified and generate new opportunities for everyone. Periodically, AEFAO holds exhibitions and individual shows by artisans and artists from the region. In this collection, motifs of kings, dancing forms, processions and landscapes are inspired by popular cultural rituals.
